The native Americans described the area with the word “Otzniachson” which roughly translates to “people of the Demon’s den.” Mid-1700’s Moravian missionary and explorer Count Nikolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf wrote in his diaries “for it was here the Indians say the evil spirits have their seats and hold their revels.”

cavetocanvas: Tina Modotti, Stairs, Mexico City, c. 1920s From the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Modotti was an Italian woman of great beauty, a revolutionary, and an artist. She acted in silent films in Hollywood before moving to Mexico, where she was joined by Edward Weston from 1923 to 1926. He taught her to photograph, and though she continued after his return to America, she photographed less and devoted herself to political causes. Her body of work is therefore not large, but each picture in it is irreducible.
